Spanish press reports revealed the intention of the Atletico Madrid team to reduce the number of French striker Antoine Griezmann’s participation this season to avoid activating the player’s purchase clause from Barcelona.
The club Roji Blancos had obtained the services of the Blaugrana star in 2021 on loan for a period of two seasons, with a clause obligating Atleti to buy the player for about 40 million euros.
And according to what was reported by the newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”, the capital club has a plan that it might do this season to avoid activating this clause.
What is the item and how is it activated?
The report indicated that the Atletico Madrid team will be obligated to pay 40 million euros to FC Barcelona in the event that the French international participated in 45 minutes of 50% of the matches available in the period in which he is at the club over the two seasons.
The Spanish newspaper indicated that there is an intention by the Atletico Madrid administration to avoid this clause by not achieving this condition
The capital club does not see that its French player deserves to pay 40 million euros, especially since he will turn 32 at the end of the current season.
This was evident in the opening match of the Atleti season, where Griezmann did not start in the Getafe match, but he replaced Thomas Lemar in the 62nd minute and scored the team’s third goal.
What about the current Griezmann participation rate?
Last season, Antoine played at least 45 minutes in 33 of the 40 matches he was available in, a percentage of 82.5%.
